Understanding Aspect Ratios

An aspect ratio is a proportional relationship between an image’s width and height. Essentially, it describes an image’s shape.

Aspect ratios are written as a formula of width to height, like this: 3:2.
3:2 can describe an image that is 30 x 20 or an image that is 1080 x 720.

A square image has an aspect ratio of 1:1, as the height and width are the same.

This matters when buying picture frames;

If you have a 3:2 image, it will look best in a 3:2 frame.
A 6×4” image looks lovely in a 6×4” frame without a matboard or an 8×6” frame with a matboard.  If you placed a 6×4” into a 10×6” frame, the matboard borders would NOT be even, and it would look like a square peg in a round hole.

Here are some of the most common sizes in each aspect ratio. You can select your photo size, and your artwork will look good in that size frame (no mat) or a larger frame in the same aspect ratio (depending on how wide mat you like).

If you are unsure what size your photo is, you can find out by looking at the information attached to the photo. Please take a look below at a screen shot example of an iPhone; however, all digital cameras and phones have this feature. This example shows that the photo size is 3024×4032 or 30×40, so the aspect ratio is 3:4, and it will look best in any of the 3:4 frame sizes listed.
